April Reads: Disasters

This month we are reading books about disasters: natural and man-made. This includes sinking ships, hurricanes, fires, volcanoes, epidemics, and post-war fallout.  I will be posting about several different titles in the blog.  Post in the discussion area about what you thought about the books.  Or feel free to pick a title of your own to share with others. 

Everyone who participates in a discussion by posting will be entered to win a pair of Cinemark Super Saver passes.

Creative Writing Workshop for Teens

Join other teen writing enthusiasts for a free Creative Writing Workshop presented by Lone Star College professor and published author, Melissa Studdard.  Learn techniques for good writing, working with elements such as dialogue, narrative, figurative language, and description.

Bring a notebook and pen, and any piece of writing you have been working on (up to 5 pages—*not required).

Pizza will be served at 12:30 pm.  The workshop will begin at 1:00 pm and run until 4:00 pm.

This winter we are reading books that were written by the eight authors that will be at the Montgomery County Teen Book Festival in January of 2012.  I will be posting titles from these authors in the blog.  Post in the discussion area about what you thought about the book.  Or feel free to pick a title of your own to share with others.

Teen Read Week Photo Contest...the American Library Association's Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) is sponsoring a Photo Contest in celebration of Teen Read Week. Five finalists will receive gift bags from Penguin Books for Young Readers that include signed copies of Jay Asher’s 13 Reasons Why as well as Jay Asher & Carolyn Mackler’s The Future of Us.

Its Teen Read Week again at the Mitchell Library!

In celebration of this special week, the Mitchell Library will be having a drawing. See the YA Room for entries.

What is Bookface?

Bookface (book feys) n: when a person obscures or augments any part of their body with a book cover causing an illusion



Contest begins Monday, October 17
Contest closes Friday, November 4 at 5:00 PM.
 No entries will be accepted after this time.

1st Place Prize -  $25 Gift Certificate for Barnes & Noble

How do I Bookface?
Grab any book that works for you, and take a picture of yourself or someone holding the book to obscure their face, as seen in the examples

Who can enter?
Teens between the ages 13 and 17 may enter the contest.

How do I enter?
There are two ways to enter: 1) Email your picture (jpg or bmp format) to
tperry@countylibrary.org.  Include your name, contact number, age and title of the book in the email.  2) Submit your printed picture and entry form to the Reference Desk on the 2nd Floor.

Will I get my picture back? 
All pictures will be returned to the contestant after November 18th, unless indicated on the email or entry form that the library may keep the item.

How does voting work?
Bookface pictures will be displayed in the Young Adult Room for the duration of the contest.  Each entry will be numbered.  The pictures will also be posted here on the Teens Read @ Mitchell Library blog at

You may vote at the Reference Desk or by email to tperry@countylibrary.org by simply indicating the number of the picture.  Votes will be tallied following closing of the contest and winners announced on November 10th. 

How will I be notified if I win?
If your Bookface is chosen, you will be notified by telephone or by email, whichever you have provided. Prizes will be held under the winner’s name at the 2nd Floor Reference Desk until December 31, 2011.
